We are excited to be part of the transforming of such a special building, in both Toronto’s history and skyline—The Hearn Generating Station—into a new mixed-use destination in the heart of the Port Lands. One of Canada’s largest buildings, The Hearn will become part of the long-term plan to transform the waterfront district into a vibrant community with new uses and programming. As December comes to a close, we wanted to extend a big thank you to our amazing interns who will be returning to their studies in the new year! Here are some of the key takeaways they shared with us about their internship experience: “I worked here for 8 months and learned so much about the intricacies of planning and how beautiful and complex it is. I got to work alongside a fantastic team and learn so much from each of them through their journeys and experiences. I will take these lessons with me as I begin to explore my career beyond school.” - Amanda Ferguson “My eight months at Bousfields have been incredibly valuable. I’ve learned so much from everyone at the company, especially working alongside Team Lennox every day. I gained a true understanding of the planning profession, from the process itself to the preparation of materials and all the steps in between. Bousfields offers an exceptional experience for students, providing the tools to grow, where the team is always ready to share knowledge and answer questions. Beyond planning, the team at Bousfields really embraces new staff, creating an exciting and welcoming atmosphere with frequent social events. This past month, Bousfielders from our Toronto and Hamilton offices enjoyed the Master Plan, a satirical play by Michael Healy (based on the book Sideways by Josh O’Kane) at Soulpepper and Aquarius Theatres. Such a great production - we highly recommend you check it out!

Michael is a Graphic and Communication Designer specializing in identity design and brand management. A graduate of Ontario College of Art + Design University, Michael holds a Bachelor of Design with a major in Industrial Design.

His work at Bousfields focuses on graphic design, branding and strategy: developing integrated brand experiences designed to function across print, digital and environmental applications. Michael’s skillset facilitates complex, multi-stakeholder brand solutions, art direction, concept development, copywriting, environmental design, signage and web design.

Gabriela Solbach

Gabriela is a Graphic Designer, with a focus on Brand and Identity design. Her design education began at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) as a 2013 graduate with an Associate Certificate of Design (Distinction). Inspired to learn more, Gabriela continued her education, with earning a diploma from the Visual College of Art & Design (VCAD) in 2015, where she presented her work in the VCAD Portfolio Show held at the Harbour Centre in Vancouver, BC.

Gabriela looks at each project from every angle, to create fresh ideas and appropriate designs. Her work at Bousfields includes, but is not limited to; production design, preparation of graphics for the Planning and Community Engagement departments, website design, designing marketing materials specifically for social media marketing, and company branding.

Claudia Kovalev

Senior Urban Designer

Claudia joined Bousfields in November 2011 as an urban designer. Prior to joining the firm, Claudia worked on numerous architectural projects in Canada and Peru. She has experience in masterplanning, design development and construction review of architectural and urban design projects. Her responsibilities at Bousfields include preparation of the assessment of built form options; built form impact analysis, including shadow, angular plane and view analysis; and zoning by-law schedules. Assisting in the preparation of planning and urban design rationales in addition to avenue segment studies related to proposed developments, urban design guidelines, urban design briefs; and land use planning and urban design evidence for Ontario Land Tribunal hearings.

Claudia is currently a Pre-candidate member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) and Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP); and a OAA Intern Architect working towards full Membership. She is also a full member of the Architects Association of Peru (CAP).
